General kitchen cleaning tips
Firstly, always wear protective clothing when cleaning, especially if you’re using chemical cleaning products
Always be sure to read and follow the instructions on any chemical cleaning products you use.
If you use new cleaning products that you have not used before test it on a small area first to make sure it won’t cause damage
How to clean a kitchen sink
Cleaning your sink will depend on what type of sink you have. We have listed a few.
Cleaning a stainless steel sink
Firstly, dampen the sink
Cover evenly with bicarbonate of soda, scrub gently but firmly with an old toothbrush and rinse
Cleaning a ceramic sink
Start by washing the sink with washing up liquid, warm water and always use a clean cloth, then rinse the sink.
Spray the sink carefully with a bleach based cleaner and remember to leave it to sit for a few minutes and rinse again.
Apply a baked soda based cleaning product to any scratched, scuffed or stained areas and scrub gently in circular motions with a soft kitchen scrubber or sponge and rinse for the final time.
How to deep clean a dishwasher
Start by removing the filter and soak it in warm, soapy water
Scrub with a toothbrush to remove any muck and residue then replace it in the dishwasher
To remove limescale, fill a cup with white vinegar and run a full clean cycle.
Cover the bottom of the dishwasher with bicarbonate of soda and leave overnight. In the morning run a full clean cycle and your dishwasher should be clean and fresh.
How to clean an oven
Start by mixing bicarbonate of soda with water to make a paste then coat the inside of your oven and leave overnight
once the mixture has dried, use a spray bottle of the bicarbonate of soda with white vinegar to go over the oven.
Leave it for 4 hours and then scrub thoroughly with a scrubbing brush or sponge before rinsing it away.
How to clean a stove top or hob
As we mentioned previously about sinks, the best way to clean a hob will depend on the type of hob you have.

How to clean a glass top stove
Start by removing any loose food or debris that may have been left and then coat the hob in a non-abrasive, cream cleaner and leave for 10 minutes or as the instructions state.
Use a good old microfibre cloth to scrub and clean the hob. You can use a textured sponge on any hard areas, but don’t use anything too abrasive and then rinse
How to clean an electric stove top
If you have a removable hotplate then take them off the hob
You are now ready to follow the steps detailed above for glass stove tops
To clean the hotplates, you can use a stronger cleaner and brillo pads to scrub off any burnt on food and then inse the hotplates and put them back on the hob
Cleaning a gas stove top
Remove the gas rings and place them in a mixture of detergent and warm water
Scrub with a clean cloth to remove any dirt and grime. You can use an old toothbrush for any tougher areas.
If your burners can be detached, remove those and clean them using a specialised hob spray and a sponge or small scrubbing brush. Avoid using water as this can saturate the burners and prevent them from working
Wipe the burners with a damp cloth to remove any excess cleaner
Cover the hob in a cream cleaner and leave as directed by the product.
Then clean with a soft cloth or sponge to remove any dirt and stains before wiping with a clean damp cloth
Cleaning an extractor fan
If you have carbon or paper filters in your extractor fan, these will need to be replaced rather than cleaned
If you have a metal mesh filter, take this from the cooker hood and place it in hot, soapy water with a cup of white vinegar and leave it to soak for 12 hours.
Wipe down the filter to remove any left over grease or dirt.
For a stainless steel surface around the mesh filter, make a paste using bicarbonate of soda and water and apply this to the extractor hood and rub with a toothbrush
Clean the hood with a clean damp cloth then replace the filter
How to deep clean a fridge
Start by emptying the fridge before cleaning it – anything including shelves, trays and attachments that can be taken out and soak these items in a food-friendly antibacterial cleaner, then rinse thoroughly.
Spray the inside of the fridge with the disinfectant and leave for as long as the instructions suggest.
Wipe clean using a damp cloth
Return the parts of the fridge you cleaned earlier and leave a cup full of bicarbonate of soda in the fridge for a day or two to absorb any strong leftover food smells
Cleaning kitchen cabinets
Start by emptying the cabinets and wipe inside them
Mix some washing up liquid and warm water and use the solution to clean the cabinets, inside and out, using a clean sponge or cloth.
Wipe down with a damp clean sponge or cloth and then leave the doors open while the cabinets dry
Deep cleaning the kitchen floor
As we have said before the way you clean your floor will depend on what type of floor you have. We have tried to cover a few different types of flooring.
Cleaning vinyl linoleum floors
Start by hoovering the floor to make sure there’s no debris
Mix a cup of white vinegar with a tablespoon of washing up liquid in a bucket then use a mop with the cleaning mixture to clean the floor
Now empty the bucket and fill it again using warm water and use a clean mop and use it to rinse the floor.
How to clean hardwood kitchen floors
Hoover the floor thoroughly
Choose a wood cleaning product that you like and dilute it following the instructions provided
Now mop the floor, being careful not to leave any puddles of the solution and rinse the floor if the cleaning product requires it.
Clean up any excess cleaning liquid so as not to damage the floor
How to clean tiled floors
Hoover the floor as mentioned before
Lightly cover the floor with white vinegar and mop the floor.
If stains remain, particularly in the grouting try using a steam cleaner.
